Augmented Reality

As technology continues to evolve so too do the ways in which we are able to mix the virtual with the real. Augmented reality allows for virtual objects to be represented on a device with a camera attached to it in 3D space within the real world,  in real time (see image above).

This is most commonly done through the use of markers (the image on the piece of paper in the image above) which the camera detects and creates the corresponding object for.

After the object is created its location and rotation in 3D space is saved in the program on the device so that the user can walk around, under and over the object to get a view from all sides. The user can also move and rotate the marker to move and rotate the augmented object. As long as the marker stays in view of the camera the object will appear.

In a game engine such as Unity 3D you can even take control of the 3D objects and use them in a game, such as turning the car in the image above into an augmented remote control toy.
