Virtual Reality And Video Games

Video game players are always looking for new and improved ways to get themselves immersed into the worlds and characters of the games they play. The development of virtual reality technology is finally beginning to offer more widely accessible devices to help with this.

One such VR device that is currently under production and due to release further on throughout the year is that of the Oculus Rift. The Oculus Rift is a VR headset (pictured below) which players wear on their head like a pair of snorkeling goggles. The headset contains two miniature screens inside that display the left and right perspective views of the virtual camera’s ‘eyes’ within the game world.

The device also tracks the users current head position and rotation, which is returned in real time, allowing for the virtual camera to be moved and rotated about in the scene mimicking the players head location and rotation in the real world.

For example if the player was playing a first person shooter such as Call Of Duty: Black Ops II (2012) they could rotate their actual head as through they were going to look over their shoulder at someone running after them and their character would do the same in the game.
